Almost Hit From Behind

March 17th, 2008 by Parked Ranger

Taking a break from politics for a rant on the road.  There’s always parked people to find or find me while driving.  On my way home from work on a single lane highway, another driver wanted to get up close and personal.  Behind me was a woman in an SUV only inches away from my bumper.  She was so close, I could see her hair color, facial features and that she had her cell phone glued to her ear, so really driving badly one-handed!

Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t travel any faster because of cars in front of me.  At one point the cars in front of me braked, as did I, but the idiot behind me almost didn’t slow in time.

So, what does it really accomplish?  Do you think you’re really intimidating me into going faster - nope.  Do you really think you’ll get there faster - nope.  You might accomplish an accident and then you’d be crying “poor me” after you get hurt or have to pay a higher insurance bill.  You probably wouldn’t care if you hurt someone else, since you’re so selfish.

(Deep breath)  OK, now I feel better, thanks.

The DNC needs to chill

March 16th, 2008 by Buddy

This has been one of the most interesting campaigns in a long time.  The electorate is actually going to the polls in record numbers.  People are voting!  People are paying attention to the issues because there is so much at stake.

The Democratic party leadership has to chill and let the process go where it goes because who ever gets the nomination - Clinton or Obama there will be plenty of time to campaign against the Republican nominee before the November election.

To that end the DNC could do a few things to make the process a little less “panic like” by seating the delegates in Florida and Michigan.  They could state that super delegates can not change their vote.  They could stop hinting to Clinton or Obama that one of them should ”drop out” for the sake of the party (like that would ever happen).  Finally,  the last thing we need is another “scream” from Howard Dean.

Chill and let the process happen because people only remember the latest sound bite and not what happened a month ago.

The press is parked!

March 1st, 2008 by Buddy

Ever since Senator Hillary Clinton decided to run for president of the United States the media has done nothing but slant the news and the story to Barack Obama.  Just read a few articles or listen to the news on TV and you can see/hear the clear bias.

“Senator Clinton attacks Obama” where “Obama exposes Senator Clinton”.  Both type of statements in the media are prevalent.  Both state a negative view of Clinton and a positive view of Obama.  Clear bias by the media!  The sad part of all this is that because of the media’s bias Obama is looking good no matter how inept he may really be.  Which could mean another 4 years of inexperience, and failures in the White House if the guy gets elected.  The media has to get over the love affair and see Obama as he really is - only a good talker!

With that said I am going to try and even the bias game with the following true event.

Barack Obama: No Hand on Heart During National Anthem?

Barack Hussein Obama’s photo (that’s his real name)… the article said he REFUSED TO NOT ONLY PUT HIS HAND ON HIS HEART DURING THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE, BUT REFUSED TO SAY THE PLEDGE… how can a man like this expect to be our next Commander-in-Chief????

Obama you are boring me with your rhetoric.

February 25th, 2008 by Buddy

Every time I watch the news I see and hear the same thing about Obama. “Change we can believe in”? I doubt you Obama. All you can do is talk the talk. You have very little substance and even less in the realm of accomplishments. You see, change is something you make happen and saying it doesn’t make it so.

Obama you are boring me with your rhetoric. Every time I hear and see you I think…..boring, boring, boring. Other then your words what have you done to make me feel inspired? The answer is nothing? Nothing begets nothing.

If you get elected, (and it won’t be because of my vote) all I see is another 4 years of nothing.

SNL Obama and Hillary Face Off

February 24th, 2008 by Parked Ranger

Thanks to a friend who sent this video link from SNL last night featuring Obama bs-ing his way in a very eloquent, but non-substantive way, as usual.

Watch it here: http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/#mea=221776

Have a great rally tonight in Boston, Hillary! Wish we could be there.

Free AVG vs. Norton Antivirus

February 20th, 2008 by Parked Ranger

Is free antivirus software as good as paying for Norton? For years, I was brainwashed into thinking that Norton was the most reliable antivirus program and nothing free is worth taking the security risk. I don’t mind paying, if that will get me the best protection, but come on, free is always better!

Having used Norton for many years, I’ve been happy with it’s performance and its ability to thwart off viruses, Trojans etc. A couple of things have changed to make me want to find another solution though.

First, the price has been increasing. It is now $39.99 for the antivirus subscriptions for a year and is now bundled with an anti-spyware program. Then when it comes time to renew your subscriptions, the online process is so confusing to many non-technical people that they are suckered into buying more that they need, like Norton Internet Security or Norton 360.

This brings up my second issue with Norton - the dreaded bloat. I’ve had more clients buy these unnecessary add-ons, only to find out that it’s the cause of their computer slowing to a crawl because every move is being scanned before they can proceed. I end up uninstalling these programs and installing antivirus only - problem solved. Except that you better use the Norton removal tool to get rid of it totally! Would be nice if their uninstall feature really worked.

Enough about Norton and on to the better solution, AVG’s free antivirus program. Check it out at http://free.grisoft.com/. I’ve been using it for about the last six months at work and so far, have been impressed. It is set to scan every morning before I arrive to work and it doesn’t seem to take as long as Norton did. My emails are being scanned as received and outgoing can be set to scan as well (turned that option off). Updates are done automatically every day usually taking less than one minute. It has caught a couple of viruses and quarantined them appropriately.

With the bombardment of increasingly powerful viruses, worms, and Trojans, it makes sense to want the best security against them. However, anytime you can get the same or better without having to pay, it would be silly not to use the free choice.

Of course, these are my opinions based on my experience. Has anyone had a bad experience with AVG or agree with my findings? Would love to hear your comments.

“It’s the gender stupid”

February 13th, 2008 by Buddy

Tell me why Hillary Clinton does not receive the same respect as Barack Obama?  Why is she referred to as Mrs. Clinton, but he is referred to as Senator Obama?

Why are women supporting the first African American presidential candidate, but snubbing the first female presidential candidate?

Why do they call her “unfeminine” for being intelligent, tough, aggressive and strong.  Isn’t that what we want in a leader?

Why isn’t Obama called “unmanly” for the same traits?

Why?  “It’s the gender stupid”.  Wake up people, pay attention and discover that Hillary’s the really qualified candidate.

Glad I Don’t Have A Blackberry

February 12th, 2008 by Parked Ranger

It’s not bad enough that Monday means trudging back to work after the weekend for many people, but Blackberry users also lost their ability to use email. Yesterday, a major service outage affected users of the smart phones across the United States and Canada. All major carriers were affected, including AT&T and Verizon Wireless. No word on the cause or when service would resume, although there were reports of emails starting to trickle in.

That is scary and parked! Glad I don’t have a Blackberry, but it could happen potentially to any of our service providers and affect all of our communication.

From an update this morning, there is still no cause stated, at least not to the public.  Doesn’t sound like a hack job, but a software glitch as they’ve experienced in the past.  Understanding software and the potential for bugs to appear at any time, it’s a good reminder to all of us to back-up, back-up, back-up.
